Environmental Institute of Georgia (EIOG) in the planning stages of new projects and initiatives, several of our board members have 

turtleEastern Box Turtle Project

A project began in 2008 to investigate the Eastern Box Turtle population along three streams in Fayetteville, GA: Horton Creek near the Flint River, Ginger Cake Creek, and Whitewater Creek near the confluence of these two streams.

The turtles are identified, measured, tagged, and photographed, and their location is mapped using a Global Positioning System (GPS) device. Read more.



musselsFreshwater Mussel Project

Freshwater mussels are an important part of river ecosystems because they remove particulate matter from the water column and are excellent indicators of water quality. In this project, two students from Fayetteville High School looked into the question of how much water each mussel filters. Read More. Read Project Report.

treeTrees of Fayette County

A special project was produced by Dennis Chase for Southern Conservation Trust in 1999 to record the names of common native trees in Fayette County.

The list includes a partial listing of the largest specimen tree of each variety and the general locations, along with information on the same tree National and State Champions and the locations of where those trees are found.  Read More.
